When I think back to my own education experience, I can almost separate out my memories of learning and my memories of academic education. In my family growing up, learning was a good and important thing. What you chose to learn and the process of learning were entirely open - there was no 'useless knowledge' and the method for developing it was as much open for exploration as the subject itself. The roots of this, and the idea that there's a distinction between 'education' and 'training', were the background to my childhood. Having my parents pay for an entirely private education, which was a huge stretch for them, would mean a lot of children would be expected to get a good job or a degree at the end of it.
